Sketching madness

Hello BARKING subscribers!

Thank you for joining my mailing list. This is an occasional update on the Graphic Novel & goings on of the project in general. I promise not to flood your inbox but give you 1st dibs on news & happenings coming up.

And there are are fair few things a foot. Of course in the clandestine world of comics there are many I can’t mention just yet and they are very exciting but I can say that I have a few events confirmed for the finished book. There will be an exhibition of artwork and varying processes to create the graphic novel at Deptford Does Art later in the year. This will be accompanied by free workshops on creating graphic narratives from personal experience with me. I’ll keep you posted on how you can join in & details of the Exhibition launch night closer to the time.

Excuse the pun in the blog title but it is both literal and actual as I try to sketch how I think madness feels when you are in it’s inky grip. Chapter 7 has now been mainly sketched and I’m starting Chapter 8 this week. My approach has been somewhat unconventional, by drawing the entire book in biro without under pencils. This is often frustrating & sometimes thrilling but the feel and aesthetic it gives the book makes it worth while. Once the full 10 chapters are drawn it’ll be on to the digital side of things before going to print.

If you’d like to see the process as it happens please check out my social feeds, if we’re not already linked.

I’ve now got only 18 copies left of the Barking preview comic taken from the graphic novel. Thank you to everyone who has bought one so far. Profits from these sales will go into the crowdfunding total at Unbound and so you are helping bring it to print with your purchase. If you would like 1 of only 100 comics please head to the shop page on my site.

I’m off for more scratchy drawing so until next time, take care x

4 is the NEW Magic Number

I’m not one for numerology but this year 4 had become a very significant number. 4 things to tell you about this month, with 2 events and a birthday that includes both!

First up it’s Mental Health Awareness Day today & it’s the opening of Mind The Art. An exhibition raising awareness for mental health through Art & featuring creators such as Wallis Eates, Rachel Ball & Me! Held at the Art Academy Newington, (Walworth Rd) Just a stroll from Elephant & Castle. The shows runs until the 21st October 11am-5pm with a Private View on Saturday 13th October 6-9pm. Please come along if you can (Check the invite for details).

Sadly I won’t be at the PV as I will be at the Lakes International Comic Arts Festival in Kendal. Unbound are tabling this year & I’ve got a stack of BARKING comics for them along with just 10 sets of my 1in4Zines. I’m really looking forward to celebrating comics and my birthday!

Yep, my age is now the answer to Life, The Universe & Everrything. No don’t worry I’m not that big an egotist but a big fan of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. In case you didn't know the answer is 42 (obvious really!) and so I’m feeling extra generous this month so…

This month’s give away is to not one but four of you! A limited edition Risograph in glorious Duo-Colour each. You’ll be getting 1 of the 4 Zines in a double random prize draw! Winners to be announced next week. Fingers crossed for you…

But just in case you don’t get lucky you can get the full set with the Zines Pledge for BARKING at Unbound. TODAY ONLY 10% off BARKING with the code MHD10 at Unbound!

Back next week with the lucky winners,

Until then Happy Mental Health to you all x
